HEMA wines win awards

I’d prefer to go to a wine shop for wine, but sometimes my wallet doesn’t allow for a visit to one or I need a bottle of wine at the last minute and there’s no specialty shop nearby. In that case, HEMA is the place to be. HEMA wines are actually damn good, especially when you consider the price-to-quality ratio.

Wine gurus Harold Hamersma and Nicolaas Klei agree with me. HEMA wines are represented in abundance in their authoritative wine guides this year. No fewer than 51 HEMA wines have won awards. These are the very best.

White

The 2016 grüner veltliner from Domäne Wachau is one of the big winners this year. In De Grote Hamersma 2018, this fresh standout receives a 9. The bottle costs just €7 and it’s incredibly versatile. Every sip is a treat as an aperitif, but it also pairs well with many dishes thanks to its good acidity and white pepper aroma.

Red

The Niche de Torre Oria, made from petit verdot and merlot grapes in 2014, is new to the range and has been enthusiastically received by Hamersma. The full-bodied red wine receives a solid 8.5. And now for the best part: you can get this bottle for €5.50. Truly HEMA, I’d say.

Nicolaas Klei’s omfietswijngids features fifteen wines worth going out of your way for. His favourite red is a wine from Bordeaux by Château Fourreau from 2015. The wine is characterised by plenty of fruit and soft tannins. This bottle is also a bargain: it’s on the shelves for €5.50.

Sparkling

Something to celebrate? Sparkling is naturally the way to go. Fortunately, HEMA is also the right place for this. The Copa Sabia, cava brut reserva emoción, is Klei’s absolute sparkling winner. A simple but well-balanced bottle of sparkling wine for just €7.50.
