H&M launches a clothing line made from wine

Leather made from wine. It sounds like abracadabra, but it certainly isn’t. More and more fashion producers are looking for solutions to make the fashion industry (one of the biggest polluters in the world!) more sustainable. And wine, as well as coffee, for example, offer a solution.

Because we throw away so many clothes, but also because of the way they are produced, the clothing industry is responsible for around 10 percent of total CO2 emissions—more than the emissions from all international aviation and maritime transport combined.
Wine leather
The fact that H&M, with its fast fashion, a major player in this problem, is coming up with solutions to improve sustainability is good news. The new Conscious Exclusive collection, available in the Netherlands from 26 March, is made partly from coffee and wine, among other materials. Vegea, as the soft fabric made from wine is called, could well become the major replacement for leather. This vegan leather alternative, originating from Italy and made from wine-industry waste, will primarily be used for H&M’s handbags and shoe collection.
Coffee dye
Coffee also plays a role in the Conscious Exclusive collection, alongside wine. The range includes clothing dyed with a colorant made from coffee grounds. And this is only the beginning: within ten years, H&M’s entire collection must be sustainably produced and recycled.
From fruit to fashion
It’s not new, by the way—leather is already being made from other fruit as well. Recently, scientists from India’s MS University announced that they had succeeded in producing sustainable textiles from banana fibers, and Fruitleather Rotterdam had already designed a bag made from mango. But now this is going to happen on an increasingly large scale. Delicious news, then!
