How-to: cleaning wine glasses

Glas rode wijn

No matter how precisely you clean them or how careful you are, it’s impossible to get those wine glasses looking as beautiful as they did when they first came out of the packaging. Don’t worry, with these cleaning tips you’ll be able to make them shine again.

Avoid the dishwasher

We understand that you’d prefer to put everything in the dishwasher, but don’t do that (too often) with your wine glasses. They’re made of thin glass, which doesn’t handle very hot water well. The powerful spray jets can also break the glass. To keep your wine glasses looking beautiful (and intact) for longer and to prevent limescale, it’s better to wash them by hand with lukewarm water. Preferably not with washing-up liquid, because it soaks into the glass and you may still taste it the next time you drink from it. Do you have crystal wine glasses? Clean them in a bath of lukewarm water with salt. Oh, and: giving your wine glasses a similar bath with baking soda and vinegar can also help loosen the limescale.

Don’t let the glasses dry

If you put the wine glasses in the dish rack after washing them, there’s a good chance you’ll spot dried drops on them the next time you use them. Not very chic. So dry the glasses immediately. Preferably with a linen towel, because unlike the cotton variety, it doesn’t leave lint behind and absorbs moisture faster.

Steam them

For an extra shiny wine glass , steam it briefly over, for example, a hot kettle. When the glass fogs up, you can see exactly where there are still marks and stains. Get rubbing! Tip: use two cloths. One for polishing, and one to hold the glass with.

Store the glasses upright

Because if you put them upside down in a (wooden) cupboard, the smell of the cupboard can seep into the bowl. The next time you take a sip of wine, you’ll taste it.
