How to make the most delicious chocolate pastries yourself (and it’s easy)

Chocolate pastries are my favorite breakfast. I buy a traditional Pain au Chocolat like that from the baker, where it is made with the most carefully rolled puff pastry, with dozens of layers and the most delicious dark chocolate. But of course, you can also make them yourself at home.

Making puff pastry is a fairly simple task, but it is very time-consuming. For this recipe, you can simply use puff pastry from the supermarket, because we completely understand that you don’t feel like folding puff pastry for hours on a Saturday morning. Do make sure to buy puff pastry made with butter—it tastes the best!
How to make the chocolate pastries
- Preheat the oven to 200°C.
- Cut the puff pastry into rectangles measuring 21 by 7.5 cm. Then place the chocolate bars on one-third of each piece of pastry. So, one bar of chocolate on 1/3 of the way from one edge, then another bar on 1/3 of the way from the other edge. Roll up both sides of the puff pastry, with the chocolate in the middle. Place them on the baking paper with the seam facing down.
- Then whisk the egg with a little water in a bowl and use a pastry brush to coat the pastries. Sprinkle with a small pinch of salt and bake them in the oven for 20 min, until golden brown.
- The chocolate pastries should have doubled in size. Let them cool for 5 to 10 min and serve immediately.
