Ikea introduces insect meatballs

Ikea wants to become more environmentally friendly and has set up a research lab to help achieve that. The lab, Space10, is experimenting with mealworms and algae, giving five classic Ikea dishes a sustainable makeover.

According to Space10, the famous Ikea meatballs will soon become neatballs: balls made from mealworms. Prefer not to have insects in your stomach? There will also be a vegetarian version with beetroot, carrot and parsnip. Also new on the menu: a bug burger with beetroot, parsnip, potatoes and mealworms, and a dogless hotdog with carrot, turmeric and berry ketchup, served in a bun made from spirulina (microalgae). And dessert? A herb ice cream.

Food for thought
Ikea hopes that people will not only enjoy the new menu, but that it will also make them think about new ingredients and ways to eat a little less meat. Want to try some? You’ll have to be patient for a little longer: the futuristic buns and balls are not yet available for purchase. They are still being developed in the lab and tested and tasted. Only after that will you find them on the menu at a number of locations.
