Influencer is presented with the wrong bill and has to pay over 11K
There’s a good chance that, especially if you live in or around Amsterdam, you’ve heard of The Harbour Club. Their largest location is in Amsterdam Oost, and if you want to dine out extravagantly, that’s the place to be. And of course, that comes with a certain price tag. YouTuber Samuel Onuha just wasn’t expecting this particular price tag…
He went out to eat with a group and, to his great delight, saw his two best friends Dom and Perignon (his words, not mine) listed on the menu — they obviously had to order them, and in the Magnum bottle too. In addition, they ordered some food and two other bottles.
‘Would you like to pay by card?’
Then came the moment when they wanted to pay, and they were presented with a bill of over 11,000 euros. Pretty steep, right? Okay, they did order quite a lot, but there are limits. According to The Harbour Club’s menu, one such bottle costs 975 euros, but that wasn’t quite what appeared on the receipt: it listed three wines at 2,000 euros each and one at 4,250 euros.
What I find striking—and you’ll recognize this too if you’ve worked in hospitality—is that all the wines are listed under ‘Open Wine’ on the bill; if you ring that up, you can determine the price of a product yourself. It seems very surprising to me that a place like The Harbour Club wouldn’t have a champagne like Dom Perignon in their system by default, but would have to enter the price manually every time.
It could of course have been a genuine mistake; either way, they ultimately only had to pay 7,500 euros, although The Harbour Club later said that they had done nothing wrong with the bill. A vague story, but in the end, all’s well that ends well. And a good reminder that you should always check your bill.
