Lay’s is launching new flavors from our favorite fast-food chains
This is going to be really dangerous for me. I have a major weakness for fast food, and when it comes to chips, my backbone is made of elastic. Combine those two things—fast food and chips—and you’ve found my biggest pitfall. That’s right: Lay’s is launching flavors from our favorite fast-food chains. I’m genuinely disappointed and delighted at the same time that Maccie isn’t included, because if it were, things would have ended very badly for me….
Maccie isn’t included, but the following three chains are: Subway, KFC and Pizza Hut. More specifically: a teriyaki sub, a chicken burger or Pizza Margherita.
“We want to put a smile on everyone’s face, and how better to do that than with these iconic chip flavors?”
That’s what Lay’s said in its statement, and yes: I completely agree. Now, I don’t necessarily think the flavors themselves are particularly daring, but maybe that’s also a plus. Not much can go wrong here, right? And who knows, this might become a hit and maybe we’ll get that Big Mac flavor after all (YES PLEASE). These three flavors are called the ‘Icon Restaurant Flavors’, and yes, I also don’t know why they call these three places ‘restaurants’ instead of fast-food chains, which is what they obviously are.
What do they taste like?
Naturally, we wanted to know right away—and you probably do too, so we pre-tasted all three flavors for you with an expert panel of genuine chip lovers (2 men, 2 women, 1 teenager). Drooling, we opened the bags. First, we tried the Pizza Hut chips. To be honest: a disappointment. “A bit bland,” “stale” and “like being served chips at your grandma’s house from a bag that had still been open since the previous birthday party.”
Did the KFC chips win us over more? Yes. The chicken-flavor chips are tasty, but you don’t taste any chicken in them. What do you taste? Pepper. You taste more pepper than chicken.
The Subway chips are by far the favorite. Whether it’s because of the ridges—it’s the only one of the three chip flavors with ridges—or because of the flavor, or a combination of both, these chips are delicious. We can even genuinely taste teriyaki in them.

The new flavors are now on supermarket shelves, and they’ll remain there for a year. And the biggest favorite will be added to the permanent range next year. Every 150-gram bag of Lay’s Iconic Restaurant Flavours chips also contains a code that gives you a digital voucher entitling you to a buy-one-get-one-free deal at Subway, KFC or Pizza Hut: pay for one meal and get one free.
