Love Really Does Go Through the Stomach

liefde gaat door de maag

I confess: if you order iced tea on a first date with me, there won’t be a second date. At least, the chances are considerably lower. Because iced tea is my love-freeze. Superficial, I know. But I’m not the only one who considers what my (future) partner drinks and eats important.

In fact, 95% of Dutch people consider their partners’ culinary preferences important. And although I would never use the words iced tea and culinary preference in the same sentence, I’m still happy with this news. Love literally goes through the stomach, research shows—and clearly, I’m not the only one who thinks so.

Big kitchen? Swipe right

And it’s not that strange at all. It has been calculated that over the course of a lifetime, we spend approximately 4.5 years eating and drinking. And yes, then you don’t want to be sitting across from someone who pulls your ultimate food annoyance out of the fridge several times a week.

The research also shows that you earn brownie points (brownies should definitely be on the menu). Your date finds it attractive when you pay a lot of attention to the evening. And what ‘screams that better’ than having spent hours in the kitchen? So buy that extra wok, take a photo, post it on your Tinder profile and get baking that nasi goreng (two portions, of course). But be careful: before you know it, you’ll have hooked a food digger.

No-go

Do you, like me, lose interest in someone who orders something you don’t like? Then you belong to the 61 percent who consider that a turn-off. Do hummus, quinoa and avocado appear on your menu every week? And does your date prefer a juicy burger or spareribs? Then there’s a chance your romantic adventure won’t last long.

Fortunately, there’s a whole world beyond the culinary one, including in love. I prefer to eat a delicious piece of fresh fish every day, while my boyfriend would rather go to bed without eating if salmon is on the menu. Luckily, we still share a love of Belgian mayo.

P.S.: fit girls and guys, pay attention! The research shows that 45 percent of those interviewed consider avid calorie-counting a turn-off. Oops, guilty (but only during the three days before I go on vacation).
