McDonald’s stops using AI at the drive-thru: too many chaotic situations’
AI is slowly taking over our world — or at least, some people are afraid it is. By now, so many apps no longer work with customer service agents, but with an automated help desk-without-people. McDonald’s also made the switch, but it doesn’t seem to have been much of a success. In the United States, the technology will soon disappear from all McDonald’s restaurants. ‘Too many chaotic situations.’
It’s a shame in a way, because at Maccie’s in the United States, where the drive-thru is managed by AI at more than a hundred locations, it mainly leads to hilarious situations. Those videos go viral, and we can’t stop laughing at them. McDonald’s has stopped laughing by now; they’re going to stop using AI at the drive-thru.
This isn’t going quite right
Take TikToker Ren Adams, for example. She went through the drive-thru to get breakfast. Her order? A hash brown, a sweet tea and a Coke. But while she is placing her order, a second car arrives behind her and also wants to place an order. And this is where things go wrong; the car behind her apparently orders a Diet Coke, which is then added to Ren’s order. She tries to correct this, but instead gets nine sweet teas added to her order. NINE.
That obviously isn’t quite the intention, but try explaining that to a drive-thru where AI is in charge. Spoiler: it doesn’t work. But Ren isn’t the only one who doesn’t quite click with this new system; Cailyn also tried to place her order, but the AI kept adding McNuggets Meals to it. The final result was 2,610 meals, and she simply couldn’t get the machine to stop. Luckily, it did make for a hilarious TikTok.

Speech recognition isn’t optimal yet
People make mistakes, and the same certainly applies to robots. The speech recognition software still isn’t accurate enough, so your order can end up completely wrong. On July 26, the so-called Automated Order Taker technology will disappear from all McDonald’s locations that use an AI-powered robot to take orders. But the fast-food chain has also indicated that robots will be used again in the future. We’re holding our breath.
