Multigrain or whole grain?

We all know that whole-grain bread is the healthiest. In practice, however, people often choose multigrain bread when they want to eat healthily. We explain the difference between the two.

Whole-grain bread is bread made using the entire grain. That is healthier, because it contains all the nutrients. The bread also keeps you feeling full for longer. So whether it is spelt, rye or wheat: whole grain is always the healthiest choice.

Multigrain
Multigrain bread is made from several types of grain. However, this says nothing about whether they are whole grains. The grains may have been processed, leaving only the inner part behind. This mainly contains carbohydrates and hardly any nutrients. So all those different kernels and seeds on the crust and the dark colour of the bread may look very healthy, but that does not necessarily have to be the case at all. Oh, and did you know that bread is coloured dark with burnt sugar or malt? It’s a crazy world out there.
How can you recognise whole-grain bread?
But now for the (butter)ham question: are you sure you have whole-grain bread in front of you? The answer is simple: read the label. There are strict regulations, and only if the ingredients list says ‘whole-grain (wheat) flour’ can you be sure that you are making the healthiest choice.
