On a budget: Tandoori Express

Not in the mood to cook anymore? We get it! But delicious food is a must—never settle for less. That’s why we’ve put together our tips for genuinely tasty takeaways, the best delivery services and affordable places.

At Tandoori Express in Amsterdam, you can pick up popular Indian dishes such as butter chicken and tikka masala, as well as exceptionally good roti. It’s not just me who thinks so; chef Freek van Noordwijk (Restaurant Breda in Amsterdam) agrees: “If I could still eat one thing before I die, it would be this incredibly tender roti with chicken leg and Madame Jeanette piccalilly.” So there you have it: you really must order this €8.50 dish at least once.
Here are five other ‘on a budget’ tips
Butter chicken and bharta
Even if you’re a fan of butter chicken, calling Tandoori Express is a wise choice. It’s quite a challenge to find a delicious version of this dish with chicken, yoghurt, cream, tomatoes, onion and a whole load of spices. The chicken is incredibly tender and the sauce is spicy and creamy. There are also plenty of options on the menu for vegetarians, from our favourite bharta (aubergine stew with naan bread or rice) to dal makhani (lentils with butter, onions, garlic, ginger and coriander).
Here’s where to get the best late-night snacks in Amsterdam
Snacks
More in the mood for snacks? The vegetarian samosas are delicious, but having fried food delivered remains tricky. Another recommendation is saag paneer, Indian cheese prepared with spices and spinach. Delivery is free from €12, and for that price you’re guaranteed a good meal. The most expensive dish on the menu is a curry with prawns, costing €15.50. Don’t hesitate—ordering here is the perfect pick-me-up after a hard day’s work.
