For the best chicken in Leiden, head to Stadsbrouwhuis on the Aalmarkt. Order the half (or a whole one straight away) Breton maize-fed chicken: a plateful of wonderfully tender chicken with an incredible beer sauce. Order a large glass of craft beer with it too, because at Stadsbrouwhuis they brew their own beer, as the name suggests.

On Tuesdays, you can enjoy a changing three-course menu for €22.50, with a matching craft beer. The rest of the menu is simple but good. For example, they have a burger with truffle mayo, satay with fries or a generously filled snack platter if you only want to have drinks. But actually, we invariably go for the chicken every time; a half chicken costs €14.50.

Home-brewed beer

This modern brown café is always packed. The staff are enthusiastic and know everything there is to know about the beers, and are happy to help you choose a tasty one. In the middle of the establishment, there are also large beer tanks where you can see how they brew the beer.
