On a budget: Toko Toorop

Can’t be bothered to cook anymore? We get it! But tasty food is a must—never settle for less. That’s why we’ve put together our tips for truly delicious takeaways, the best delivery services and affordable places.

Co-owner of Toko Toorop, Paul Toorop cooks dishes from the Indonesian cuisine together with his business partner Ed. Both men previously worked as chefs at Ballroom, the lovely little place on Witte de Withstraat (and also completely on a budget).
Classics
What can you expect from them? The dishes that are always on the menu include sweet-fried tempeh, pork belly, nasi goreng, rendang, bami rames, satay and some other delicacies such as spekkoek and pastei.
And the prices? They’re absolutely fine, because for under twenty euros per person, including a drink, you’ll get a complete meal. Every third Tuesday of the month is tenner night, so you can eat even more cheaply then.
Do-it-yourself
Would you like to cook a dish from the Indonesian cuisine yourself? You can! Ed and Paul encourage you to learn how to make the dishes. The two previously made some fun instructional videos showing, for example, how to make the perfect rendang in under an hour. All videos can be seen on their website.
