Owner of Michelin-starred restaurant Beluga Loves You opens ice cream shop in Maastricht

Oelalala, ice cream lovers: pay attention. Servais Tielman of Michelin-starred restaurant Beluga Loves You has opened an ice cream shop in Maastricht. The new Smullies sells unique ice cream flavors, special patisserie, smoothies, milkshakes and coffee. And oh my, everything looks absolutely insanely delicious.

Servais is not doing this alone, by the way, but with a number of partners. What’s lovely is how the idea for Smullies came about: it originated in the mind of 25-year-old Jonathan van Kleij, who worked at restaurant Beluga Loves You (BLY) while studying at Hotel Management School Maastricht. His love for BLY’s Big Boy Macaron led him to set up a macaron shop as a business case for his final thesis. Servais and Stephanie Tielman were enthusiastic, and one thing led to another.

Eclairs and macarons
The name may be somewhat childish, but that certainly doesn’t apply to the products you can buy here. The changing range is made by hand using top-quality ingredients. In addition to the famous Big Boy Macaron that started it all, you can also buy eclairs, madeleines, luxury pastries, cakes and chocolates here. All little works of art that make you want to sink your teeth into them immediately.

Salted popcorn ice cream
The ice cream range varies from traditional flavors such as vanilla and chocolate to changing specials. How about pink ruby chocolate with raspberry and rose water, caramelized white chocolate with rosemary, or salted popcorn ice cream? Doesn’t sound particularly childish, does it?
Bring on summer
Smullies is located at Frankenstraat 198. In May 2022, the second location will open in the new Foodchurch on Maastricht’s Boschstraat. Smullies is open all year round from Wednesday through Sunday. Opening hours vary with the seasons and the weather.
