Nagi: “Got ground meat at home? Then you’ve got dinner! Ground beef isn’t often seasoned with Asian flavorings, but it has since become one of my specialties. Ground beef is very convenient: you don’t have to chop the meat yourself, and it absorbs flavors very easily. This recipe is my latest version; the honey and ginger make the meat aromatic, sticky and savory. Mix the ground meat through fluffy rice and eat it without fuss, with a spoon from the sofa.”

How to make ground beef with honey and ginger

  • Sauce – Add the sauce ingredients to a bowl in the order indicated. (The honey will slide right off the spoon if you dip it in sesame oil first!) Stir everything together.
  • Frying – Heat the vegetable oil in a large non-stick frying pan over high heat. Fry the onion, ginger and garlic, stirring, for 1½ minutes. Add the ground beef and stir-fry until crumbly. Add the sauce and fry for 1 minute until it has mostly been absorbed. Stir in the sesame seeds, then let the ground beef caramelize for 30 seconds without stirring. Stir everything together and let it caramelize a little further for another 30 seconds without stirring. Repeat twice more until the ground beef is caramelized and looks like it does in the photo.
  • Finishing and serving – Add the water and keep stirring for 30 seconds; this makes the ground beef even more succulent. Spoon the ground beef sauce over rice, garnish with sesame seeds and spring onion, and serve with cucumber ribbons.

Tips

  • The sauce is especially suited to the flavor of ground beef, but you can also use ground pork, chicken or turkey.
  • Dark soy sauce gives the ground beef a reddish-brown color and adds soy flavor. Light or regular soy sauce will not provide the same flavor and color, but makes a suitable substitute in an emergency.

Storage

Keeps well in the refrigerator for three days and in the freezer for three months.
