Sandwich cut in half? That’ll cost you two euros
Recently, I went to get a sandwich for a friend and myself, and I soon realised: we could easily have shared one, because those sandwiches were gigantic. That would be cheaper too, you’d think. But that’s not entirely true — at least not in some places. Fortunately (for now?), this isn’t the case in the Netherlands, but in Italy, don’t be surprised if you have to pay extra if you want to split something.
Two euros may be added to the bill, as two British tourists discovered.
‘Unbelievable, but true’
They couldn’t believe what happened and shared their displeasure on TripAdvisor about these extra charges at Bar Pace, on Lake Como. The establishment did not respond to them, but the Italian newspaper La Repubblica did when they asked for an explanation.
‘Extra requests cost money. We had to use two plates instead of one. The time needed to wash them doubled, and we had used two placemats. It took us time to cut it in half,’ Cristina Bacchi from Bar Pace. Honestly, maybe I should get a summer job cutting sandwiches there. Earning two euros in about five seconds sounds pretty ideal, right? That’s simply 1,440 euros an hour. I’m totally on board.
