The highlight of siomay is definitely the fish-filled dumplings. The dish is also served with egg, steamed potato, cabbage, and sometimes tofu, and is covered with a generous layer of peanut sauce. In Indonesia, it is quintessential street food sold at small stalls. It is also hugely popular with Indonesian schoolchildren because it is often sold along the streets near schools.

How do you make siomay?

Siomay comes from Chinese-Indonesian cuisine. The dish is therefore heavily inspired by Chinese dim sum. It was ultimately developed further mainly in Sumatran cuisine. In the Chinese-Indonesian version, it is usually not covered with peanut sauce, but with sweet-and-sour sauce and spicy chili sauce. The dumplings are filled with fish, but there are also variations with chicken or vegetables.

With this recipe from Daily Cooking Quest, you can whip up your own siomay.
