Snackspert tastes and reviews Lidl’s croquettes

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has already devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his lifetime, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. Today, he gives his verdict on Lidl’s croquettes, and a huge sandwich also makes an appearance.

Lidl’s croquettes
Nice work, Lidl. Lately, they’ve been launching one unusual yet delicious croquette after another, and they really are worth recommending. Ras el hanout croquettes, chimichurri croquettes, and now beef bourguignon croquettes too. Another excellent croquette. A hint of red wine, along with beef that’s cooked pretty well. Not something you expect from supermarket products. I did think they were really on the small side, though—perhaps something to improve next time. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lidl has also launched new aged cheese and beer croquettes. Here too, the fact that they’re a little too small applies, and in terms of flavor I don’t think they’re as good as Kwekkeboom’s Old Amsterdam croquettes. They’re definitely tasty, perfectly fine, but I’m missing a reason to buy them more often. A bit like an average First Dates episode: “yes, I had a lovely time, you’re very nice, but for me there’s nothing more in it than friendship.” Exactly that. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Spicy chicken sandwich from van Warme Bakker DAM, Amsterdam

It may look like I’ve had a very rough night, and I understand that, but that’s not actually the case. This is the spicy chicken sandwich from Warme Bakker DAM in Amsterdam. And honestly, it really packed a punch. The chicken is spot-on, there was enough heat, but there’s one major downside: you don’t really want to eat this around lunchtime. “Then get it at night?” I hear you say, but that brings us to the other downside: this place closes every day at 8:00 p.m. Say what? In the city center, a place like this? Because this is ultimate late-night food, not lunch. The sandwich is so, so, so greasy, and there is so, so, so much chicken—you really need four beers and four Tripel Karmeliets to go with it. An okay sandwich for the afternoon, an excellent sandwich for the middle of the night. Too bad this place closes at 8:00 p.m. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Salt beef and beef salad sandwich from Broodje Tip Top, Arnhem

Awful. No joke, this sandwich from Broodje Tip Top in Arnhem is awful. Because that’s what it’s called. This place’s “awful” sandwich is genuinely a dish that sends you straight toward having your stomach pumped. Just looking at it means you won’t be able to eat for the next 87 days. What’s on it: egg, liver pâté, beef salad, salt beef, mayonnaise, ketchup, and, on top of that, pickle for people who are just as sour as the average sports fan after a lost match. I definitely thought it was tasty—I especially love liver pâté—but god, what a labor it is. On the other hand, it really is an ideal sandwich for people recovering from a hangover or who are mega hungry at 3 a.m. Either way. Because that’s Broodje Tip Top: no hipster fuss, just an old-fashioned, straightforward place where you can simply get a tasty sandwich. Perfectly fine, then. And you might as well buy that stomach pump in advance. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½
