At home, we rarely consider a trip to the supermarket one of the highlights of the day. But abroad, at least one supermarket visit is always planned in the hunt for edible souvenirs to take home. What shouldn’t you miss from each country? FavorFlav browses the shelves.
Today we’re returning from France with:
Foie gras in a jar
Yes, yes, we know… But that one from the organic farmer in the Dordogne who produces his own goose livers is genuinely animal-friendly. And you can taste it.
Confit de canard in a tin
French (and, incidentally, Spanish) supermarket shelves are an oasis filled with canned goodies. From gésiers de canard (duck gizzards) to cassoulet de Castelnaudary (a South French bean dish). Why don’t we have that? So now we have to lug it all home. Especially tins of confit duck legs. Give them a nice crust in the frying pan with the duck fat from the tin. Done.
Nougat de Montélimar
Montélimar in France’s Drôme region is the birthplace of soft, chewy nougat with almonds. Virtually every Mediterranean and Middle Eastern country has some form of nougat, ranging from hard to soft, but take this one home. You won’t regret it.
