Spoiled sardines at French wine bar: one dead and seven injured

A tragedy at the popular Tchin Tchin Wine Bar in Bordeaux: guests ate spoiled sardines and became seriously ill — one guest even died after eating the rotten fish. It is likely that all the victims contracted botulism; a serious illness you can get from toxins produced by a bacterium.

An investigation has since been carried out into how these sardines could have ended up on guests’ plates.

‘He handled things clumsily’

The blame appears to lie with the owner of the wine bar. The authorities said: ‘He did not store the food properly. He handled things clumsily.’ The owner himself also wanted to speak to the press to explain what went wrong: ‘I had received a batch of cleaned sardines. When I opened the packaging, some of the sardines smelled bad. I threw those away. The others looked fine, so I served them.’

The wine bar is especially popular with tourists, and the victims included Americans, Canadians and Germans. The victim who died from eating the sardines was a 32-year-old woman. What a nightmare. The French authorities are not ruling out the possibility that more people will come forward; one of those who fell ill only reported it after arriving in Spain, because his symptoms appeared later.
