Sugar Exhibition at the Museum

Suikerpistolen2

Until 18 February 2018, the exhibition Sticky Business – The Seduction of Sugar in Art can be seen at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam. Among other things, you can walk through a candy landscape while the scent of candy and cola wafts into your nose.

In general, people have a love-hate relationship with sugar. Some see it as addictive poison, while others enjoy it intensely. FavorFlav belongs to the latter group. But sugar turns out to be more than a sweet temptation; it can even be transformed into art. And as sugar lovers from the very beginning, we are of course incredibly enthusiastic when an exhibition is devoted to this sweet stuff.

Walking through a candy landscape

Food designer Marije Vogelenzang invited 20 artists to create art with her around the theme of sugar. These artworks can now be admired at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam. For example, you can walk through a 30 m2 candy landscape or through a swarm of sugar guns, reflect on the impact of cola at a cola machine, or lick sugar women (yes, really).

Serious and light-hearted

What is great is that the artists are not simply for or against sugar. Some works pause to consider major issues associated with sugar, such as corruption, slavery and eating disorders. Other artworks are a light-hearted ode to sugar. For example, there are still lifes by an Italian photographer depicting celebrities’ diet products, and a British artist duo filmed people engaging in sploshing (sitting naked in a pie, no joke).

For the ultimate experience, a hint of sweetness occasionally wafts through the museum and into your nose. The scent of candy, chocolate, cola and ripe raspberries makes you never want to go home again.

The exhibition can still be seen at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam until 18 February 2018.
