Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!

When the documentary Super Size Me was released in 2004, the food world was in turmoil. Fast food came under heavy criticism as a result of the film. Now a sequel is coming: Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!

Super Size Me
In the 2004 documentary, Morgan Spurlock eats nothing but McDonald’s food for 30 days. Three meals a day. He washes down all the burgers with cola, milkshakes and other drinks available at McDonald’s. His cholesterol shoots up and he gains 11.1 kilos in those 30 days.
Sequel
Where Super Size Me put the harmful effects of fast food on your body on the map, Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken! draws attention to the harmful effects the fast-food industry has on the environment.
This time, Spurlock opens a fried chicken restaurant, Holy Chicken!. The establishment is a parody of existing fast-food restaurants; ‘artisanal’ tap water is served and the chickens that end up in the fryer are ‘ethically raised chickens’ from the local area.
Although Spurlock’s approach is mainly very funny, we suspect that with his new film he also wants to emphasize that running a fast-food joint in a ‘responsible’ way is a major challenge. Whether he succeeds can be seen in the documentary.
The premiere of the documentary is at the Toronto International Film Festival. This festival starts on September 7. It is not yet known when the documentary will be shown in the Netherlands. We’ll keep you posted.
