Supermarket staff on: the most rude behavior from customers

If there is a group — besides healthcare workers — that deserves applause, it is supermarket employees. Man, they have been through a lot lately. Some of it fun, some of it less so. We were curious about their stories, so we asked them a number of questions. This time: what is the rudest thing a customer has done during these coronavirus times?

Setting things aside
“People who want us to set scarce products aside especially for them and get angry when we say we cannot do that.”
Abuse
“People abuse you for all kinds of things: because we no longer had a product, because I said I did not have time to get something for them, when I asked someone to take a step back because of the 1.5-meter distance… Apparently, all of these are reasons for them to abuse us.”
“The rudest thing was a woman who completely berated me because I did not stop people from buying more than one product.”
Extensive coughing
“Customers who stand very close by and cough extensively. I usually do not really dare say anything about it, but it is annoying.”
Restocking
“I have received several complaints from people who said we were not restocking enough, so I strongly pushed back by making it clear what we do to ensure that they can buy what they want.”
Coughing deliberately
“We had a few customers who deliberately started ‘coughing’ on the cash when we asked if they would like to pay by card instead of with cash. Absolutely ridiculous. Those people are also no longer welcome in our store for the time being.”
Getting angry
“Customers who get extremely angry that they are no longer allowed to buy alcohol after eight o’clock. Yes, really angry! Threatening to take it anyway, without realizing that we could then receive a very hefty fine. And it really happens very often!”
