Sushi San: great all-you-can-eat sushi with good service and robots serving you
If you like all-you-can-eat sushi at a great price, in a beautiful restaurant with excellent service and help from robots, the new Sushi San is worth the detour.
Sushi San has only been open for two weeks, but when we come for lunch on Sunday, the spacious restaurant is already fairly well filled. A Chinese restaurant was located here for years, but the new owner, Nyls Wang, has completely renovated it. Thanks to the colourful interior, such as the striking blue plush seating, combined with large hanging plants and trees, an intimate atmosphere has been created, and it is barely noticeable that 275 guests can dine here. Couples, friends, families; many people have found the new restaurant on Panweg in Zeist.
What can you expect?
‘At our restaurant, you can enjoy unlimited, affordable contemporary Japanese cuisine, while service and quality are held in high regard,’ says Nyls Wang. Omotenashi is what Sushi San is all about.
Omotenashi: what is it?
In short, it means something like being service-oriented and hospitable, but it is also a way of interacting in Japan. Holding the door open for someone, speaking to customers in a friendly manner; charming gestures that are wonderful when you are dining somewhere. The service is remarkably friendly and helpful, and the orders arrive quickly; lovely!
Sushi San specials
For a fixed price, each person can order four dishes per round, across three rounds. There is a choice of more than 100 dishes, from nigiri and maki to gyoza, yakitori and poké bowls. In addition to the familiar classics, such as California rolls and edamame on the regular menu, there are also Sushi San specials. These include dishes with more luxurious ingredients, such as the wagyu truffle roll and soft-shell crab roll. There are also sushi dishes with somewhat obscure fillings, such as the Dragon roll with grilled eel and cream cheese. We particularly enjoy the classics, as well as the hand rolls, although we do not quite understand why there is so much chives and other green herbs in everything.
Japanese whiskies
Sushi San also has an extensive drinks menu with cocktails and good wines, such as Prosecco from Bottega and wine from the Chilean winery Santa Ema. There are also special beers, including Japanese varieties, and special Japanese whiskies.
Robots serving you
The robots, each with their own name, are a striking feature of the service. They work together with the regular staff to give customers extra service and attention. Omotenashi—we mentioned it already.
Lunch only
All in all, Sushi San is a lovely place where you can enjoy an extensive lunch in a beautiful setting at a great price. Due to the current restrictions, Sushi San is open daily from 12:00 to 15:30. The lunch menu costs 22.50 euros, excluding drinks; children aged 4 to 10 pay 15 euros.
