Test: are your knives still sharp enough?

You can’t avoid it: your beloved knives become dull over time. With these checks, you’ll immediately know whether you need to visit the knife sharpener or get your honing steel out of the cupboard.

The paper test
The best way to find out whether your knife is still sharp is to use the paper test. Hold a sheet of paper at the top and cut through the paper with the knife in your other hand. The knife should glide through the sheet without requiring any effort from your hand. Doesn’t it? Run your knife along a honing steel and do the test again.
Pay close attention to which part of the knife the blade keeps tearing the paper, and focus on that part of the knife to sharpen it there. Be careful not to make your knife uneven. Does the knife remain dull? Then take it to a knife sharpener.
The tomato trick
Do you still have a tomato in the fruit bowl? You can also test the sharpness of your knife on a tomato. If the knife is really sharp, you can slice a tomato without applying any force. Do you need to use extra force and does the tomato get crushed? Then your knife is dull.
