Christmas is the perfect time to go all out, and Albert Heijn is cleverly tapping into that with its AH Excellent Speculoos Wreath. At €9.99, this wreath is the most expensive Christmas dessert in the supermarket’s range this year. But is this dessert worth the high price? We tested it for you.
In terms of appearance, the speculoos wreath really scores points. It looks beautiful: a festive wreath with a shiny golden speculoos layer and chocolate stars. What’s more, the combination of speculoos, vanilla-flavoured bavarois and a crunchy speculaas base is a promising choice.
What does the Albert Heijn speculoos wreath taste like?
Albert Heijn recommends thawing the speculoos wreath before serving or eating it as a semi-frozen ice cream cake. We chose the latter, and it worked incredibly well. Straight from the freezer, the texture is pleasantly firm and the speculoos flavour came through perfectly. The vanilla flavour and base provided a nice balance. The verdict: a score of 8 to 8.5 out of 10.

We were slightly less enthusiastic once it had thawed. The outer layer then feels less crisp, more like a sticky, soft jelly. In our opinion, that makes for a less enjoyable eating experience.

Want to impress with this dessert? Serve it straight from the freezer. That way, it retains its delicious bite and tastes best. At €9.99, it is certainly pricey, but honestly: it is definitely a showstopper on the Christmas table. It serves up to 8 people.
