The best food photographer of 2019

Chinese photographer Jianhui Liao can call himself the food photographer of 2019. He won first prize in the annual Pink Lady Food Photographer competition for his photo of a group of Chinese villagers at a noodle festival.

The winning photo, titled Cauldron Noodles, was taken during a celebration honouring the goddess Nuwa, in the Chinese province of Hebei. As part of the annual festival, villagers wear Qing Dynasty costumes to celebrate Nuwa’s birthday. Part of the festivities involves eating noodles in the afternoon.

Of the nine thousand entries from seventy-seven different countries, the jury found Liao’s photo the most beautiful and atmospheric. He won a prize of five thousand pounds (around 5,850 euros). His photo also won in the Food for Celebration category.
