The best markets in Paris

The market: the pinnacle of French culture and the place to score artisanal delicacies. As you wander through Paris, you’ll find them everywhere, but the best markets are more than worth that considerable detour. Prefer to stay undercover? No problem either: the journalists and other Parisian foodies behind food guide Eat Like a Local Paris will tell you exactly where to go.

Market 1: Marché des Enfants Rouges
“I love walking through the Marché des Enfants Rouges (the oldest covered market in Paris), where stalls sell food from all over the world, and there are a few stands selling organic vegetables, a florist and some small restaurants.” – Lindsey Tramuta
39 rue de Bretagne 75003
Closed on Mondays • €€€€
Market 2: La Grande Épicerie de Paris
“The La Grande Épicerie food hall at Le Bon Marché is filled with culinary gifts. You can buy Michel Cluizel chocolate bars made with single-origin cocoa, Christine Ferber jam (not cheap, but people are obsessed with it), every Maille mustard flavor imaginable, beautiful boxes of French salt, biscuits from Brittany or a jar of salted caramel sauce. They also have lovely bags that are difficult to resist.” – Julie Neis

Market 4: Marché Couvert Batignolles
“Here you’ll find lots of fruit and vegetable stalls, a butcher, two fishmongers, a cheesemonger, a wine merchant and more. On the north side of rue Brochant, you’ll find one of my favorite boulangeries, where you can get the best chocolate chip cookies in Paris, delicious buttery, crumbly croissants and fresh rye bread.” – Maeve Schauerman Decouvelaere
96bis rue Lemercier 75017
Closed on Mondays • €€€€
Market 5: Marché d’Aligre
“My favorite is Marché d’Aligre, both indoors and outdoors. I could wander around here forever.” – Raphaële Marchal
This market is so popular with Parisians that you could easily make it the only market you visit in Paris. The stalls on both sides of the street are filled with vegetables, fruit, cheese, roast chicken, olives, oysters, herbs and more. In the middle, there is also a flea market where you can find old treasures.
