The Carnival snack: Flügel cream bun

Flügel roombroodje

‘FUCKING HELL!’ I shouted across the pin-drop-quiet newsroom when I saw Bakker Bart’s Carnival creation. FavorFlavs’ Emma came and stood next to me, and she let out a scream too. Exaggerating? Judge for yourself:

That’s right. Flügel cream buns. Because, well… why would you only drink Flügels when you can eat them too?

“It’s a hit. The bun was invented by a baker himself and is now being adopted by several other businesses,” a spokesperson for the bakery told Editie NL. To be fair, the buns are festive. And very Carnavalesque, with that pink cream crest.

Nauseous

A little mood killer for the Flügel-loving party animals among us: you have to show your ID. Because the rule still applies—even during Carnival—under eighteen means no alcohol.

Don’t immediately start stuffing down buns like crazy to get completely hammered. That won’t work. “Then you’d have to eat a lot of buns,” the spokesperson says, “And I think that would make you sicker than the alcohol itself.”

I’d rather skip it altogether, but can you really see yourself enjoying such a soft bun filled with sweet pink alcoholic cream? Then you need to visit one of the Bakker Barts in the east or south of the country. Alaaf!
