The most annoying pranks we pulled in the hospitality industry, #3

horeca-geintjes

Oh, oh, oh, aren’t we all hilarious. Three weeks ago, I innocently wrote about the most annoying pranks people pull in the hospitality industry (see the first edition here), and your reactions on Facebook soon led to numero dos. And yes, number three couldn’t be left out either. Apparently, the people with the best (or perhaps the worst) sense of humor work in hospitality. In any case, practical jokes are right up the alley of hospitality pros. So read, shudder and chuckle: here are the most annoying hospitality pranks once again.

Is there actually a limit to this kind of prank? No, right? The lamest things imaginable came up, and I think someone should just write an entire book full of them. We could then hand it out to hospitality businesses so they can give every new employee or intern a baptism of fire with it. Brilliant idea, if I do say so myself.

1. Send the newbie to Blokker to get a gluten sieve, because gluten-free bread needs to be made. Love it.

2. Tap every mussel against the edge three times, otherwise they won’t open properly. That’ll keep you busy for a while with a kilo. What do you think the logic behind this is if you’ve fallen for it? That the mussel thinks: ooh, that was the third time, I’m coming out!

3. Not specifically for the hospitality industry, but I thought this one was great: send people off in search of wireless WiFi cables.

4. Send someone down to the cellar for hot chocolate. Then they can only find cold chocolate. Honestly, you really shouldn’t fall for this one.

5. Say that you need to call the De Leeuw family back about a reservation… And then give them the number for Artis. Oh, that poor zoo: I think they must get calls like this all the time.

6. Have them turn the storeroom upside down looking for beer foam tablets. Unfortunately, I probably could have fallen for this one myself back in the day…

7. Have someone scare the eggs. And leave it up to them to figure out exactly how to do it. And of course, secretly film it.

8. Send someone to fetch a bucket of steam to refill the steamer… Surely you should secretly film this one too? Watching a few new colleagues try incredibly hard to catch some steam in a bucket.

9. Off you go to the storeroom, and don’t come back without a bag of carbon dioxide. Poor, poor new employees… Honestly, with almost everything on these lists, I would’ve said, ‘Okay, sure, I’ll do it’ when I had my first hospitality job at 15. You don’t dare say no…

Bring on the jokes

Do you have any more? I can genuinely never get enough of these, so sharing is caring. I can’t wait to hear them!
