The Streetfood Club in Utrecht

Utrecht has gained a new hotspot: The Streetfood Club on Janskerkhof. The restaurant belongs to Wes Schreutelkamp. He is also behind WT Urban Kitchen, Fico and Beers & Barrels. That means an impressive interior and surprising dishes.

The Streetfood Club is already the talk of the town. That makes sense, because restaurant Broers, which used to occupy this spot, has been closed for some time. During the renovation, the windows were covered up except for a few ‘sneak peek spots’. The marketing machine was running at full speed and the anticipation was expertly built. Now that it is finished, all of Utrecht wants to know who the new kid in town is.
Photographing foodies
Outside, on the bright pink picnic tables, it is all about seeing and being seen. When we walk in, we almost trip over the photographing foodies. We have to give them credit; this place is very Instagrammable. First, we look around. There is a luxurious cocktail bar with a DJ, a fresh urban jungle and a bright pink room on the street side. We are given a spot beneath the stained-glass roof among the plants and flamingos.
The extensive menu features dishes from all over the world, such as dim sum, spring rolls, tacos and ceviche. As purists, we do have to mention that no single restaurant can ever master all these cuisines equally well. The food is not bad, but for truly good dim sum, you should simply go to a Chinese restaurant (in Utrecht, Pacifica or Tai Soen).
What to eat
We recommend ordering the feed me menu for €29,50. Your table will be filled with countless dishes while you sip a Hello Kitty cocktail or chocolate freakshake. As the evening progresses and the glasses keep being topped up, we become increasingly delighted by the nostalgic tunes by Missy Elliot and TLC coming from the speakers.
Another fun detail: the website features a traffic indicator showing how likely you are to get a table. At the time of writing (Wednesday at 11 a.m.), the traffic light is green: ‘Lucky you, you’ll get a table (almost) immediately!’. We had better head back there soon, because the Philly cheesesteak and the kimchi waffle with Korean fried chicken and maple syrup on the all-day brunch menu are calling our name.
