The world’s first butter bar is a fact

Just book me a ticket to Colorado, because after I’ve breathed in some fresh mountain air there, I’m heading straight to the world’s first real butter bar. Believe me, for this woman (and her bar), I’d happily travel quite a distance.

Spread it on
You’re probably aware that here in the editorial office, we absolutely love real, good, thick, rich butter. Jersey or Guernsey butter, for example, preferably au naturel on a slice of fresh sourdough bread – when we get this in a restaurant, we often lose interest in the ‘real’ dish altogether.
And what about Shauna Lee Strecker, a musician by trade, who one day brought home some amazing raw-milk butter from the farmers’ market? “I’m on to something”, or words to that effect, and so the idea for her butter bar Bella La Crema was born.
Fancy a little tasting?
Here, you don’t order a wine flight or a beer tasting; instead, you can go all out with a tasting of different organic raw-milk butters made from local, happy regional cows, which Strecker then flavors in an artisanal way with herbs and other flavorings. Or rather, flavors… as many as twenty different ones – ranging from bell pepper, onion and garlic to gently sweet chocolate butter with coffee, cinnamon and cayenne pepper.

Beyond the supermarket tub
In America, so much food is processed so intensely that it’s completely dead, according to Strecker. ‘Food has just been killed in so many ways’, while her lightly pasteurized butter is still packed with probiotics and good bacteria. As Europeans, we’re probably a little less anxious; if you’re not pregnant, no one here will snatch a delicious piece of raw-milk cheese from your hands. Still, her business is a huge success, and she has apparently tapped into a significant demand. We get it. So we’re intensely hoping someone follows suit in our little country, because let’s be honest: The Netherlands (cows) Second!
