These are the favorite cheap wines of top sommeliers

Of course, top sommeliers regularly bury their noses in the most expensive wines. But that doesn’t mean they always drink expensive wines. In fact, they won’t turn their noses up at a supermarket wine that costs less than five euros. These are their favorite budget bangers:

Isabel van Bueren, sommelier The White Room by Jacob Jan Boerma
“Verdicchio from the Marche (Italy) is always good value for money. You can simply buy the Moncaro Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi at Albert Heijn for less than five euros!”
Dennis Blaaser, sommelier Le Hollandais
“Aldi Greenbridge Chardonnay. With a screw cap and a Volkswagen van on the label. It costs €3.99!”
Julian Cleton, sommelier Wijnbar VinVin
“Domaine Garras Gascogne blanc. A lot of wine for your money; €7.95 per bottle. Gascogne is back, and this gem proves it!”
Laurence Reintjens, freelance sommelier
“White: the Grüner Veltliner from HEMA and red: the UNLITRO by Ampheleia, made by Elisabetta Foradori; she normally makes wine in Alto Adige but created this as a hobby project in Tuscany. This wine is so delicious that the bottle comes in a one-liter format—75cl simply isn’t enough. Super delicious with charcuterie and anything with tomato sauce.”
Wouter van Essen, sommelier Wijn- en Eetbar Most
“Colagon Verdejo by Palacio de Bornos has an absolutely incredible price-to-quality ratio. Crisp, fresh citrus fruit with fragrant tropical fruit and a lovely long finish for €6.95 per bottle. Never gets boring!”
Ruth Engels, sommelier INK Hotel Amsterdam
“Farnese Fantini Sangiovese, an Italian red wine from Albert Heijn, with lots of fruit but also a firm twist. Also super delicious with pasta and meatballs. And it costs less than six euros!”
Maaike Kauffman, sommelier Héroine
“Australian Pinot Noir from Lidl.”
Bram Faber, sommelier Wijncafé Lefebvre
“The red Guigal Cotes du Rhone from Appie, just under 12 euros and it can even be kept for a while!”
