These viral cranberries are the perfect snack for the holiday season

Honestly: I don’t eat cranberries very often. When I have a urinary tract infection, I drink cranberry juice. But I have to admit, that’s about it. A shame, because cranberries are absolutely delicious. They’re super festive too; they’re truly a fruit associated with Christmas. Especially the Christmas cranberries that are currently going completely viral—and that you can make yourself incredibly easily.

It’s not surprising that you hardly ever eat raw cranberries. They’re incredibly sour and even a little bitter. The texture isn’t exactly anything to write home about either. So you need to do something with them. We’ve done that before, for example in these falafel bites with fig, cranberry and walnut and this banana bread with cranberry and walnuts. From now on, we’re adding the viral Christmas cranberries to our repertoire as standard.
Just three ingredients
The cranberries aren’t just incredibly delicious; they’re also ready in no time. You only need three ingredients. Now that’s what we like. What do you need? About 100 grams of cranberries (duh—but not dried!), 120 grams of powdered sugar and a sweet drink of your choice. In this recipe, many people opt for prosecco. If you’d prefer an alcohol-free option, orange juice is also a good choice. Sprite is even recommended by some. I’d say, definitely try your favorite flavor.
How to make the viral Christmas cranberries
Have you managed to gather the extensive ingredient list? Then you can make the cranberries. Here’s how:
- Rinse the cranberries under cold water. Check which cranberries don’t look very good and remove them.
- Place the rinsed and drained cranberries in a container with a lid.
- Pour your chosen drink over the cranberries until they’re just ‘under water’. Stir well. Then drain them once more in your colander so that all the excess liquid drips off.
- Put the cranberries back in the container with the lid. Sprinkle the powdered sugar over the cranberries. Don’t be stingy, because the less powdered sugar you use, the greater the chance of a slimy mess.
- Shake the lidded container back and forth for 20 to 30 seconds. Let everything bounce around vigorously in the container so that all the clumps disappear and all the cranberries get a nice coating.
- Scoop the cranberries out of the container and spread them over a baking sheet.
- Place the baking sheet in an oven at approximately 100 degrees Celsius for 5 minutes. There’s no need to leave them in longer; you simply want the cranberries to dry out.
- Remove the cranberries from the oven and let them dry and cool outside the oven.
That’s it! You now have wonderfully Christmassy cranberries. They’re almost like little candies. Share them, give them as a gift or eat them all yourself. The latter will probably happen, because this is truly something you won’t be able to stop eating. Merry Christmas!
