Things to do: cheese tasting at Kef

kef

Abraham Kef has been a household name among Amsterdam cheese lovers for more than 60 years. This is where you buy the creamiest or, conversely, stinkiest French cheeses. Did you know you can pull up a chair for a tasting on Sundays?

That means cheese, lots and lots of cheese. You can choose between two or three platters (€25 and €35 respectively), filled with cheeses that increase in intensity. Each platter comes with a matching glass of wine, which is particularly nice on a Sunday afternoon. For €7.50, you can add a course of charcuterie.

Nothing but cheese
We actually always go for three courses consisting solely of cheese—that is their specialty, after all. You start with a cheese that is so creamy it feels like taking a bite of whipped cream, and finish with a powerful blue cheese. Each platter comes with French bread from Gebroeders Nijmeijer, sometimes accompanied by dried figs, date bread, dried grapes or quince jelly.

With every cheese, you get a fun and highly knowledgeable explanation. No matter how often you do the tasting, you learn new facts every time. They also switch up the cheeses and wines, so doing a tasting a few times a year never gets boring.

Tasting room
Sundays on the Marnixstraat are hugely popular and often fully booked. At the tasting room in Noord, you can visit from Wednesday through Sunday for a tasting, or simply enjoy a delicious sandwich.

Gift
Tip: they also have gift vouchers. Are your in-laws or culinary colleague celebrating a birthday soon? Then you now know what to buy them.
