This butcher is looking for the customer he accidentally charged €1,000

Honestly: do you always stare at the card machine with your full attention while paying for something? I don’t; it’s become almost automatic, especially now that you can simply wave your card somewhat carelessly past that contactless thing. But with what happened in this local news story, that could turn out to be very expensive…

Because on September 7, a butcher in Amsterdam accidentally charged someone more than a thousand euros for a few groceries. And the bizarre thing is: the person in question doesn’t seem to have noticed the missing money at all!

Expensive chop

Butcher Hassan Najib of Slagerij Zagora feels incredibly embarrassed, and he has no idea who the customer was. He accidentally entered an incorrect, far too high amount into the card machine, only discovering his mistake much later. “Neither of us noticed. I only found out during the administration.”

Search

He tried desperately to find out who it could have been by asking the bank for help, “but they didn’t want to help. I really want to return the money, so we’re now asking all the customers who visit our shop… I can’t use money that isn’t mine, that’s for sure!”, Najib says.

Appeal

Najib is determined to keep searching until the customer in question is found. There is a conspicuous yellow sign hanging in the shop, but of course any help in this search is welcome. So if you think you know who this may have happened to, please contact Slagerij Zagora in Amsterdam’s De Pijp neighbourhood (near the Albert Cuyp Market).
