This Dutch province has the tastiest tap water, according to research

Did you know that in the Netherlands, you’re better off drinking tap water than bottled water? Tap water here often comes from the same source as bottled water and must meet stricter quality requirements. But which province has the very best-tasting water? 

Our drinking water mainly comes from groundwater, which is essentially rainwater that seeps through various layers of soil and is filtered along the way. Before it eventually comes out of our taps, it is thoroughly checked and purified once again. This ensures that we always have safe, clean drinking water. Nevertheless, there are still significant differences in taste between different regions of our country. Water company KRNWTR+ had a jury of taste experts investigate which province has the best-tasting water.

Water sommelier explains

Marielle Thaidens is a water sommelier and explains where the difference in taste comes from. Marielle: ‘Taste is, of course, a matter of opinion, but generally speaking, you can say that soft water tastes better than hard water.’ Hard water contains a lot of limescale and minerals and tastes rough on the insides of your teeth and along the edges of your tongue, according to Marielle.
