Trending: Gourmet churros

Churros, who doesn’t know them? Until recently, the deep-fried strips of dough were mainly eagerly devoured by preschoolers and festivalgoers who had been drinking heavily. Nowadays, this snack of Spanish origin is the next best thing on Instagram. And how could it be otherwise, with a topping of matcha glaze and sprinkles?

With these adaptations – in the past, if you were lucky, you got a little cup of chocolate sauce with them – a new Instagram trend was born: ‘gourmet churros’, which essentially means churros for connoisseurs. As far as we’re concerned, that name is rather debatable, but let’s set that aside. KitKats, Smarties, peanuts, caramel sauce, frozen yoghurt and even grated cheese – you name it, they use it to decorate their churros:
