Vegans where you at? The carrot dog is here!

As a vegan, there’s a lot you have to miss out on: steak, cheese boards, eggs and yes, that hot dog bun is also off limits. Or is it? Now on the shelves of your nearest supermarket: the Knakwortel!

Whether you like carrots
You read that right: this entirely plant-based ‘hot dog’ is made from a carrot. Koen, the product’s creator, had a vegetarian girlfriend who didn’t like vegetables. Ehh, that doesn’t sound like the most ideal combination to us. Fortunately, Koen made her life a lot more enjoyable. He developed the Knakwortel: a carrot he made so delicious that it almost doesn’t taste healthy anymore.
Carrot
The Knakwortel is a marinated bunch carrot with smoked herbs and spices. All of this is vacuum-sealed and gently cooked until the carrots are just tender, while still retaining some bite. The perfect texture for a soft, white bun. Preferably overloaded with sauce and lots of fried onions.
Build your bun
Want to try the plant-based sausage? It’s simply available at Albert Heijn. Not at every location, so check quickly whether it’s available at yours too. All you have to do is fry it until golden brown in a frying pan, and it’s ready for the bun. Enjoy!
