We love Fantosti’s

Big news! From today, you can buy ready-made toasted sandwiches at Albert Heijn that are at least as delicious as the creations you make yourself at home. The Fantosti’s are available in pepperoni & mozzarella, four cheese, and tuna & cheddar flavours. 

A delicious lunch, a quick snack, or the ultimate late night snack after a night out: the Fantosti is there for every moment of the day. The toasted sandwiches come from the freezer aisle, so all you have to do is heat them in a sandwich maker or in a pan. The men behind this brilliant idea are Peter Derks and Roland van Balen of De Spijsbereiders (FavorFlav Food Top 100 2017). Are they already tired of toasted sandwiches after all that tasting? Not really. Peter: “We tested and tried out countless combinations to arrive at this ultimate selection, but I still regularly eat one of these delicious toasted sandwiches.”

Three different flavours

The flavours of the Fantosti’s are inspired by popular pizza toppings. The four-cheese toasted sandwich is made with delicious spelt bread and topped with young matured cheese, gorgonzola, Italian hard cheese, goat’s cheese and tomato tapenade. The pepperoni & mozzarella toasted sandwich, made with sourdough bread, contains not only pepperoni and mozzarella but also tomato tapenade and basil pesto. The tuna toasted sandwich is generously topped with cheddar, red onion and tomato tapenade and is made with corn bread. “I think the four-cheese toasted sandwich is the most special, but pepperoni is my favourite at the moment. Although, of course, all three are fantas.. uh, fantostisch,” says Peter.

De Spijsbereiders

For weeks, Peter and Roland tried every possible combination at their office in Den Bosch. Peter: “The truffle toasted sandwich didn’t make the cut, for example; we thought it was too tricky. People won’t buy that. But there wasn’t anything that was really disgusting or anything. Everything tastes good in a toasted sandwich, but these are the best.” This isn’t De Spijsbereiders’ first handy invention. We know them, among other things, for Brouwhout, which makes it easy to package a six-pack of beer, and for pop-up restaurant Anderhalf: an amazing project in which the men share their view on food with the help of a huge extendable table.
