What Other Countries Put on Their Fries:

Most people travel the world to discover other cultures, venture into the jungle or lie on tropical beaches. And us? We want to try every kind of fries in the world. Because hello, there’s so much more than patatje oorlog. From Peru to South Africa: these fries are worldly!

Canada
Get your knife and fork ready, because you’ll need them for this Canadian version of fries. In Canada, they eat their fries with meat gravy and melted cheese. Guaranteed mess, but very tasty.

Vietnam
‘Khoai tay chien’ is Vietnamese for fries. They eat them the ‘usual’ way there, but also differently… At first glance, you might not even notice, but in Vietnam it’s common to eat your fries with butter and sugar. The fries are first fried in butter, and then powdered sugar is sprinkled over them.
Kenya
Spicy-food lovers, pay attention! In Kenya, you’ll find masala fries: fries seasoned with garlic, chili powder, paprika and masala. With a tomato-masala sauce and a little lemon. Fast-food flavor bomb in 3, 2, 1…
Bulgaria and Ukraine
A game of butter-cheese-eggs, anyone? But on your fries. In Bulgaria and Ukraine, they eat their fries smothered in a mixture of melted butter, cheese, egg and pepper. You’ll find it under the name kartofi sus sirene. Hmm… Is this the first stop on our world trip? We don’t think so.
Peru
If you find lomo saltado on the menu in Peru, there’s really only one thing you can do: order a portion (or two). This is truly one of those dishes that makes us wonder why we haven’t got it in our country yet. Strips of steak, fries, onion, garlic and spices are stir-fried together. Add a little rice and voilà!

The Philippines
In the Philippines, they have something called ‘banana sauce’ and we want it. Now. The sauce is made from bananas, sugar, vinegar and spices. It’s often eaten with chicken, but also with fries. Banana sauce was the solution to the tomato shortage in the Philippines (because: no ketchup). Right, we’re going to see if we can quickly get this sauce at the Asian supermarket.
Turkey
In Turkey, they eat patso. In other words: a sandwich with (soft) fries, mayo and ketchup. We see what you did there, Turkey. Super simple, but so delicious. This one’s for everyone who always gets funny looks when they put a few fries on their hamburger. You’re not alone.
