Where to eat an XXL grilled cheese sandwich

Recently, we came across the tweet below and asked you: where else can you get grilled cheese sandwiches like these? As it turns out: all over the country! So you might as well start plotting that grilled cheese route.

Oh, and a few readers (rightly) pointed out that this is of course nothing new. In Portugal in particular, they eat their grilled cheese sandwiches this way all the time. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s useful to know where in the Netherlands you can order an XXL grilled cheese sandwich, right? 🙂

Anyway, our search began with this tweet:

And these are the places you recommended:

Café Jaap – Amsterdam

After a lap of ice skating at Jaap Edenbaan, settle in here for classic split pea soup with rye bread and bacon, or for the giant JAAP grilled cheese sandwich with bacon, mozzarella, chicken breast and young matured cheese.

Grand café Hooghoudt – Groningen

Alongside seven different XXL grilled cheese sandwiches—the biggest in Groningen—they also serve a club grilled cheese XXL for two people. That means six layers of horizontally sliced bread topped with ham, young matured cheese, bacon bits, smoked chicken breast, fried onions, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise.

Pizzeria Bella Vita – Enkhuizen

Rick and Gwyneth don’t just bake pizzas—they also make deliciously large grilled cheese sandwiches. They have the baker slice the bread crosswise and fill it classically with cheese, but you can also go for one with cream cheese and smoked salmon, or chorizo, bell pepper and Spanish peppers. HOT!

Slagerij Reinders – Vershal Eindhoven

Ad gets his bread (sourdough) from baker Deeg in Heusden and loads his grilled cheese sandwiches with all kinds of ingredients. Organic cheese with or without ham or salami. If you want something with more kick, he has spicy cheese, or goat cheese with honey (and bacon). And what about a tuna melt? Homemade tuna salad with organic cheese and capers. Is your mouth watering yet?
