Why eating out at home is the way to save the hospitality industry

It’s no secret: the hospitality industry in the Netherlands is largely on its knees. Of course, countless creative initiatives are being launched to keep things running, but the loss of revenue is enormous—and so is the uncertain outlook for many restaurant owners. What to do?

It’s very simple: support the hospitality industry wherever we can. More specifically: by eating out at home as often as possible. (And it’s extremely trendy too—just take a look at this ‘eating out at home’-trend we wrote about in October 2019). Today, a campaign is being launched to encourage this, entitled: ‘Going out together, together at home’.
A joint initiative
It is a joint initiative by various competing companies (such as Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Thuisbezorgd, Burger King, KFC and FEBO) from the hospitality and food industries. With ‘Going out together, together at home’, they are calling on everyone to continue going ‘out to eat’ right now, but at home, in order to support your favourite local restaurants. Because now that we are spending our days indoors en masse, for many restaurateurs delivering meals is the only way left to recoup part of their lost income. Many restaurants that until recently were not involved in delivery or takeaway, such as RIJKS*, have started doing so as well. Chef Joris Bijdendijk of RIJKS*: “It takes some getting used to for the whole team, but we’re happy to be able to continue cooking for our guests. In addition, our restaurant remains in the spotlight, and that’s worth something too.”
Let’s make the hospitality industry great again
So do yourself and the hospitality industry a favour and enjoy eating out at home (more often). Fortunately, many new and unusual delivery and takeaway restaurants are joining the scene. Every day, we test one for you, from a Michelin-starred restaurant to a cocktail bar—yes, they’re now doing plenty of shaking and stirring for the cosy home drinker too! Cheers and Bon Appétit! #samenuitsamenthuis
