Why Taking Part in an Eating Competition Is a Really, Really Bad Idea

Eating as much as possible in as little time as possible. In America, eating competitions are even called a sport (!). Hot dogs, pies, ice cream or even jalapeños; everything makes an appearance. The competitions are also immensely popular in Australia. But things went seriously wrong during a lamington competition…

It sounds tempting: stuffing as much of your favorite snack as possible down your throat in exchange for a wad of cash. But this thought undoubtedly changes when you discover the dark side of eating a lot and quickly. Just look at what your stomach looks like after such a competition…
Lamington cake
During ‘Australian Day’ (which fell on January 26 this year), eating competitions are organized all across the country. There was one at a hotel in Queensland too, where the traditional lamington cake was on the menu this time. And yesterday, it proved fatal for one of the participants. Bystanders saw the woman get into trouble shortly after putting a piece of cake in her mouth. She suffered a stroke and then choked. Sadly, half an hour of resuscitation did not help.
Unfortunately, someone dying during an eating competition happens more often. Why people still continue to take part at the risk of their own lives remains one big mystery to me.
