World Sandwiches: Sloppy Joe

Sloppy Joe, Manwich, Slushburger, Yum Yums, Dynamite and the Tavern Sandwich are all names for the same sandwich: a white bun with a spicy-sweet ground meat sauce. The first one was made somewhere in the United States around 1930.

The sandwiches were initially sold in cafeterias, but soon found their way onto the menus of many school canteens. There, they became a favorite meal because of their low cost and high nutritional value—and, of course, they were very tasty too.

Method

Melt the butter in a frying pan and sauté the onion and garlic for three minutes. Add the ground meat and fry until crumbly, about ten minutes. Add the brown sugar, mustard, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce and sambal, then pour in 150 milliliters of water.

Stir everything well and let the sauce simmer gently for ten minutes without a lid. Cut the buns open and fill them with a generous spoonful of the ground meat sauce and a few slices of pickle.
