You can now score a gigantic cheese for cooking at Albert Heijn

parmigiano reggiano

This will probably be on my family’s menu on Christmas Day, and I thought it was such a great tip that I wanted to share it. You can now buy a gigantic, round cheese at Albert Heijn to cook with. Ideal for your Italian evening; add some truffle and you’ll have a star-quality dinner on the table in no time.

Just bear in mind: you’ll only find them at the larger Albert Heijn stores; I spotted this one at Gelderlandplein in Amsterdam.

Buon Appetito!

I’m talking about Christmas Day, but given that these cheeses are truly huge and can easily weigh more than five kilos, they’ll keep you going for quite some time. It isn’t real Parmigiano Reggiano, but it is considerably more affordable (€17.50 per kilo), which is certainly nice. Life has become expensive enough already, I’d say. And when I briefly Googled a real Italian round cheese… I came across options costing as much as €700. Count me out. I’ll happily pop by Appie instead.

Just keep in mind that you’ll have to lug it around. But then again, you’ll have something to show for it, because this is guaranteed to steal the show. I’m already looking forward to this main course.
