You need to see this in August

food tv tips augustus

We all watch Netflix and TV. Because we have a hangover and are incapable of doing anything else, to learn new things, or simply for fun. Every month, FavorFlav gives you an overview of the best, newest and most informative television programmes, films and documentaries about food and drink.

As for the summer month of August: not much happens on TV. Fortunately, we have 24Kitchen, a channel that doesn’t care about weather conditions or holiday periods – whether it’s 30 degrees and sunny or raining cats and dogs, they always provide that culinary fix on your screen. And every now and then a food film or documentary also comes along on Netflix, Viceland or at the cinema. Foodies can breathe a sigh of relief.

Miljuschka’s Street Food Vietnam

When: on 24Kitchen every Wednesday at 7:00 pm from 2 August.

What:

Miljuschka shows you Vietnamese street food cuisine. Each episode takes place in a different part of the country, with local dishes from that region taking centre stage.
Why watch: If you’re not yet very familiar with Vietnamese cuisine – which is understandable – this is a great way to get to know it. Before you know it, you’ll be serving the tastiest banh mi and pho.

Estée in Paris

When: on 24Kitchen every Monday at 7:00 pm from 14 August.

What:

24Kitchen chef Estée Strooker is in Paris, the city where her love of food was first kindled. She cycles through the city and finds culinary inspiration in well-known and hidden places. At the end of the day, she returns home and cooks in her own little kitchen.
Why watch: Going to the City of Love soon? Estée is the perfect culinary guide.

Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown seasons 4 and 5

When: on 24Kitchen every weekday at 8:00 pm from 4 August.

What:

American chef Anthony Bourdain visits a different country in each episode to immerse himself in the culture, the people and, above all, the local eating habits. In the fourth and fifth seasons, he travels to Paraguay, Iran, Scotland and Beirut, among other places.
Why watch: Because Anthony Bourdain is a hero. Read why here.

The Chef’s Line

When: every weekday at 6:45 pm on 24Kitchen from 5 July.

What:

A new programme from the creators of MasterChef Australia, in which four home cooks take on a restaurant brigade each week.
Why watch: MasterChef Australia is an outstanding classic in the world of food TV. A programme by the same creators promises plenty of good things.

Reruns of the 24Kitchen Food Truck Challenge

When: From 4 August at 6:25 pm on 24Kitchen.

What:

Three teams compete against each other for the title of ‘Best Food Truck’.
Why watch: This is your chance if you’ve missed the Food Truck Challenge so far. The participating chefs are Jasper and Marius Gottlieb and Hugo Kennis, vegetarian sisters Kee & To Huidekoper, and 24Kitchen chef Miljuschka Witzenhausen together with talented chef London Loy. All excellent chefs, so there’s plenty for you to learn from.

Back to Burgundy

When: showing in Dutch cinemas in August.

What:

A beautiful film about the relationship between two brothers and their sister, set in their childhood home among the vineyards of Burgundy.
Why watch: Because the images are stunning and suddenly you’ll want to buy a house in the French countryside to make wine there for the rest of your life (and that’s a good idea).

Barbecue

When: available on Netflix from 15 August.

What:

The film’s director, Matthew Salleh, visited twelve countries to investigate their barbecue cultures.
Why watch: Because the BBQ shots will make your mouth water and watching this documentary will give your BBQ skills a boost.

Okja

When: this film is on Netflix, so you can watch it whenever you want.

What:

The lead character, Okja, is a genetically modified super pig. Okja is raised by a girl who becomes attached to the extraordinary animal. Eventually, Okja must be sold and bred.
Why watch: The film is about capitalism, corporate responsibility, the relationship between humans and animals, and activism, without becoming dry or academic – it is actually highly entertaining. It offers a different perspective on the food industry.

Beerland

When: all episodes from the first season can be watched online at viceland.com.

What:

In Beerland, you follow Meg Gill, founder of Golden Road Brewing (a hip American brewery). She goes in search of the very best home brewers. She then gives the best home brewer the chance to come and brew their beer on a larger scale at the Golden Road brewery.
Why watch: The programme does have a competitive element, but it’s mainly about having a good chat about beer. A wonderfully light-hearted programme for a lazy Sunday.
