Yuck! This is how many pests are hiding in your Christmas tree
Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree, how lovely are your branches… filthy? They are if we’re to believe research from the University of Bergen in Norway. It shows that as many as 25,000 (!) minuscule creatures are crawling around in your Christmas tree. Gross!
From spiders to mites and from bugs to springtails: they’re having one big party in your tree. Something you obviously really don’t want to know. Or do you? You could perhaps still opt for a Christmas tree made of wine bottles. No way those critters are going to… bug out in there.
Luckily: it’s not that bad
Good news: fortunately, there’s no real reason to panic. Most of the little creatures kick the bucket within a day because they can’t handle the warmth of our homes at all. Your tree and your house are also far too dry for them. And even if they do survive, they probably won’t be able to find enough food to stay alive for long: most households simply don’t have enough (different) plants indoors for that.
Shake up the Christmas tree
Nice, but what if all I want for Christmas really is a tree without any bugs? Give the tree a good shake after buying it and leave it in the shed for a day. That should help limit the number of insects in your tree. And if not, perhaps it’s time for last Christmas with a real Christmas tree?
