Make it yourself: everything spice

Do you always go for the plain bagel, the one with sesame or poppy seeds, or do you want the whole shebang and always choose the everything bagel? In the latter case, you should keep reading, because you can now put that topping on anything.

We’re seeing it more and more often: everything spice. Bagel lovers had been fans for years of the mix of poppy and sesame seeds, garlic and onion powder, and salt. Mainly on top of their bagel, that is, but these days the spice mix is sprinkled over everything.
Everything donut
So in New York I ate an awe-some everything donut at The Doughnut Project. A donut, so sweet, with garlic and onion powder. It might not sound like something you’d immediately want to eat, but this was so delicious! There’s so much to eat in New York, yet we went back for this donut the very next day. It was precisely the savory combined with the sweet that made it a winning combo. At the time, I had no idea this was apparently a trend, because donuts aren’t the only thing being topped with this spicy goodness.
Everything everything
What do you eat it with, then? It’s delicious with all kinds of bread, for starters. During drinks, dip bread in olive oil and then in some everything spice for an upgrade from standard olive oil and salt. Sprinkle it over mac and cheese, corn on the cob, boiled or scrambled eggs, fried rice, grilled chicken, guacamole, nachos, potato salad, or soup. Or go for that sweet-savory combination and sprinkle it over your vanilla ice cream. And let’s not forget salmon, a classic combination with a bagel and therefore also with everything spice.
In America, you can buy everything spice at Trader Joe’s; unfortunately, we’re not so lucky in the Netherlands yet. Luckily, making it yourself is incredibly easy.
Method
Mix all the ingredients together and store in a sealable jar or container. Or sprinkle it straight over any food you come across.
