5 cat cafés for a cup with your coffee

It has been twenty years since the world’s first cat café opened in Taiwan: Cat Flower Garden, or actually: 貓花園. Since then, hundreds of cat cafés have opened their doors around the world. The Netherlands is no exception—we’ve listed five of them.

Kattencafé Kopjes – Amsterdam
The Netherlands’ first cat café opened its doors in Amsterdam West in April 2015. Eight cats live there (three males and five females), all from shelters. Pebbles Kitty Cat Café – Rotterdam
Pebbles is also home to eight cats: Luna, Pixel, Pim, Pom, Giny, Roffa, Misty and Shade. Every one of them comes from a shelter. There is an entrance fee here too: €2.50 from Wednesday through Friday or €3.50 at the weekend. But in return, you can play a game, read a book and, of course, drink a hot cup of coffee or tea with a purring cat on your lap.

Kattenparadijs Mispoes – Den Bosch
Whether you want to start your day with rusks topped with aged cheese or jam, or enjoy lunch with wraps, panini or a club sandwich, it will inevitably be better if you can cuddle a cat at the same time, don’t you think? At Mispoes, three of the eight cats also have names good enough to eat: Noodle, Taco and Sushi. If those aren’t foodies, we don’t know what is.

Kattencafé Op z’n kop – Groningen
At Kattencafé Op z’n kop, you can not only have breakfast and lunch, but dinner too. Every day from 5 p.m., they serve a daily special (think lasagne, quiche or a pasta salad for €8.95). Meanwhile, Timon, Bojangles Junior, Dove Benny, Thomas O’Malley, Dotje, Lientje, Puck and Moby happily roam around.

Kattencafé Katdeau – Hengelo
Allergic to cat hair? Kattencafé Katdeau in Hengelo is home exclusively to Sphynx cats. Yes, they may look a little less cute and fluffy, but Borrel, Nootje, Cashew, Pretzel and Tuc are just as sociable as their names suggest. What’s more, you can also visit Katdeau for—just as the name suggests—gift items.
